A firm's accounts receivable portfolio is often the largest asset on its balance sheet and, therefore, should be regarded in much the same way as any other commitment of corporate resources. Management must give the same attention to this capital investment as it does to manufacturing and distribution. Many owners of small businesses, though, often begin handling the credit function themselves, along with the other activities of purchasing, selling, financial planning and general office management. As their businesses grow, they find it increasingly difficult to give proper attention to the function of receivables management. This handbook focuses on the role of credit in business and is geared towards Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs. It describes the qualifications and duties of the role of receivables management; explains the working tools that are available to the person performing the credit and collection tasks, discusses the objectives and needs of the credit function, and pinpoints certain measures for evaluating the receivables portfolio. It also describes the factors used to evaluate a customer, the means used to control exposure on accounts, and collection procedures that are basic to the job.
While discussing the fundamentals of these significant areas, this handbook is in no way intended to be a comprehensive manual; therefore, it necessarily abbreviates much of the theoretical background upon which the Credit profession is based. To further assist you, recognizing the time constraints placed upon you by the demands of day-to-day business activities, we have included a summary of key points at the end of each chapter. For a more detailed discussion of these issues, other publications from the Credit Research Foundation are available by subject matter. (See all CRF publications below)
