Where You Live Has an Impact on Your Salary: Rural/Suburban/Urban Locales Trump Your State or Region

In determining salaries, whether you work in an urban, suburban, or rural area is much more important than the state or region you are in. Most large states, for example, have entirely different labor markets. If you are in Milwaukee, the labor conditions and cost of living are significantly different than in rural parts of Wisconsin.

So an important question on the survey asked respondents whether they worked in rural, suburban, or urban areas. Overall - and this would vary depending upon the position, of course - there is a 16.9 percent premium for suburban over rural positions. The overall difference between urban jobs over suburban jobs is much less, at 2.3 percent higher in urban positions. Here is a snapshot of the results of that question, based on aggregated data for all positions in the survey.
