One sign of competent, highly respected credit staffers is that they are given greater responsibilities.

If you have been given a greater role to play in your department, you can prove that your boss has made the right decision if you keep these professional points in mind:

  • Learn all you can about your new responsibilities. Get as much information as you can from your superiors. Find out what they expect of you.

  • Talk to people involved in the work. Get their opinions. And above all, observe and evaluate before taking action.

  • Expect difficulties. You're never going to confront a problem-free situation. After all, a credit staffer's job involves solving problems. So look upon each difficulty as an opportunity to do your job and impress your superiors.

  • Don't try to imitate your predecessors. Certainly you can learn from them. But ultimately, your style must be your own.

  • Build solid relationships. Most staffers try to build strong relationships with their superiors. But relationships with peers sometimes get overlooked. When taking on new responsibilities, it is especially important to be as cooperative as possible with other staffers. You may need their help to succeed.

  • Set realistic priorities. It's important to set goals. But don't set them so far ahead that no one can see that you're making progress. Try for some small wins now so that you can show that things are moving in the right direction.
